How to Use Your Trial Marks to Improve Your HSC Result

Written by Pinnacle Learners · 29 October 2026 · 3 min read

Most students treat their trial mark as the final word on what ATAR they'll get. That couldn't be further from the truth. Your trial marks are actually the best springboard you have for an even better HSC result.

1. Stop Looking at the Total

Your overall mark can hide a lot of useful information. A 78% in Maths Advanced could mean you're strong across the board and slipped up on a few hard questions. Or it could mean you're losing two marks on almost every question. Those two students need completely different study plans.

Go through your paper question by question instead of focusing on the raw total. You'll get a much clearer picture of what you need to revise, and which habits are costing you marks or earning them.

2. Work Out Where You're Losing Marks

Knowing how you lost marks is the first big step towards improving. Go through your paper and sort every lost mark into one of four categories:

  • Time pressure
  • Conceptual gaps
  • Misreading the question
  • Silly mistakes (usually the biggest one)

Each category needs a different fix. Cutting down silly mistakes comes from repeating easy questions until they're automatic. Cutting down time pressure mistakes comes from doing practice papers under stricter time limits than the real exam. Whatever your mark, let the types of mistakes you made guide your study, not the raw number.

3. Redo the Paper

This is the least popular step, but it's the most effective. Two to three weeks after your trials, redo the papers under exactly the same conditions. That means no notes.

If your marks go up, your revision is working and you're on the right track. If they stay the same or drop, you need to change your study habits or spend more time on the underlying concepts.

4. Talk to Your Teacher

Whether you get along with them or not, your teachers want you to do as well as possible. Ask them every question you have about your paper, get them to help you break it down, or compare your response with a higher band response. It will make a big difference before the HSC. They're not just there to teach content. They're there to help you get your best result.

The Bottom Line

Your trial result is a piece of data, not a label. One bad mark doesn't mean you're incapable, and one great mark doesn't guarantee the same result in the HSC. Every school sets papers at different levels of difficulty and marks them differently.

To do your best in the HSC, use your trials as a platform for improvement, not a mark that defines you.
